Training Coordinator’s Report 2010
As ever I would like to welcome the new volunteers who trained and joined us this
year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our existing volunteers for
the amazing job they do (one of whom has been doing it since inception!)
Our volunteers respond to people of all ages and backgrounds with totally unselfish
giving. They are happy to sit with patients while carers go out for a well deserved
break; or take patients shopping, or for a coffee. They will read to patients, play
chess, iron or garden - all cheerfully.
I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing work of the Area Organisers and the
other Supervisors. The Area Organisers are first in the front line of the organisation,
being the first to meet patients, and liasing between patient and volunteer. The
Supervisors, through monthly meetings offer the space to debrief and receive
necessary support to the volunteers to enable them to continue in this work. Together
they supply a great support service to Hospice Home Support, always at the end of a
telephone if need be.
Getting together for supervision and for training days gives a chance for us all to
work together, in contrast to our usual working on our own, and affords the
opportunity to meet up with others we may not have seen for a time.
We had a very much appreciated day's training in February, delivered by a senior
member of the Samaritans. It focussed on suicide and the life-limited patient,
which is very topical, having been widely covered by the media in both news and
drama productions recently. The day was well attended (volunteers giving up a
Saturday) and valued by everyone as some patients can experience very low
feelings at some point in their illness.
We are currently planning future training days for later this year and in Spring
next year. These days are important to the organisation, for as well as allowing
people to get together we all appreciate learning something new and keeping
up to date.
Finally, I would like to thank Linda, our administrator, for keeping the wheels
running smoothly (in spite of an office upheaval). Linda is the 'nerve point' of
HHS, first contact for referrals, volunteer enquiries, training enquiries, she
organises supervision dates and groups, committee members and meetings,
AGM's, training dates/venues, media contact etc. etc., and lots more.
The strength of the organisation is the people within it and as ever, this
year it has been a pleasure to work with them.
