|
Area Organisers Report Once again we have had a busy and active year, our volunteers have been fully utilised. During the year one or two have had time out which we are glad to give, this is usually for personal or family reasons. We are delighted that the current training course has 14 potential new volunteers. We as Area Organisers visit initially to assess the patients needs and then introduce a volunteer. We then step back and allow the relationship to develop. As a volunteer we visit patients as a neighbour would, they are amazed that it is on a voluntary basis to do whatever is needed. Often the patients are weak, frail and worried about their illness. The simple tasks around the house like shopping, ironing and dusting can be very onerous and offers of help are welcome, while doing these we can listen, support our patients and show that we care. One volunteer walked the difficult road with a lady who had many troubled relationships to talk through before she died. The volunteer was able to listen and befriend this lady and see some healing of the relationships in the days before the patient’s death. A lady who is housebound looking after her very poorly husband is given a few hours off each week to have lunch with a friend or have her hair done and is enabled to continue in her caring role. Sometimes the patient is the carer for an elderly relative or spouse and one of our volunteers sitting alongside is invaluable. Working for Hospice Home Support is a privilege, we are allowed in to homes of those patients who are terminally ill and the work itself is our reward. We are so grateful to our wonderful hard working volunteers without whose commitment Hospice Home Support would not exist.
